Because the colonists needed help with the farming and work around the house. Slaves were brought from Africa to the colonies by boat that took sometimes years to get there. In New England and Middle they worked in cities and towns in stores, inns, and in people's houses and had more freedom than in the South. In the South most worked in plantations and harvested cash crops like rice, indigo and tobacco or were expert carpenters, blacksmiths, or tailors. And the south had more slaves then the Middle and New England colonies!
