What major event led to the secession of Southern states from the Union?

The feeling of being different is what made them want to leave. When the north side said "Hey, they are people and should be free" and the south didn't agree, they felt out of it. It was hard because they had friends and family in the other side but they had no choice but to leave because of the incommodities of being around each other.
