We can rearrange the first equation (x - y = -3) to be [latex] y = x + 3 [/latex] (from adding y to both sides then adding 3 to both sides) we can plug (x + 3) for the y in the second equation and get [latex] x + 3(x + 3) = 5[/latex] we can distribute that 3 [latex] x + 3x + 9 = 5 [/latex] add like terms [latex] 4x + 9 = 5 [/latex] subtract 9 from both sides [latex] 4x = -4 [/latex] divide both sides by 4 [latex] x = -1 [/latex] therefore your answer would be [latex] x = -1 [/latex]
