What caused the Mexican-American war was American Imperialism and the fact that Mexico had an unstable government. Because of this, they weren't able to focus on their problems. The course was that they Mexican- American War started over a boundary dispute dealing with Texas. The result was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which said that Mexico had to give up land to the U.S. and Texas.
