In the early 1800s, why did large numbers of immigrants move to the western frontier? In the early 1800s, why did large numbers of immigrants move to the western frontier? Irish immigrants moved to the western frontier to find jobs on potato farms. German immigrants were restricted from living in cities, so they moved west. I'm learning about all of that right now and nowhere did it say anything about German and Scandinavian immigrants. I'm sure there were some, but not enough to have to learn everything about it. The Irish "Potato Famine" happened during mid 1800s, so it could be possible that that's the answer, but it makes more sense that it would be the English because they've been immigrating to America since the 1400s
