How is static electricity produced

Static electricity requires a separation of positive and negative charges.

The phenomenon of static electricity requires a separation of positive (+) and negative (-) charges. When two materials are in contact, say two blankets, electrons move from one material to another, leaving an excess amount of positive charge on one material, and an equal amount of negative charge on the other. Resulting in static electricity.
