Chemical reactions only involve the valence electrons and how they form bonds with other atoms to get to a lower energy state.  Nuclear reaction, however, take place in the nucleus in which protons and neutrons are gained, lost, or changed.  nuclear reactions produce a lot more energy than chemical reactions due to their involvement of the nucleus. I hope this helps.  Let me know in the comments if anything is unclear.
