Could someone please work out this problem for me.  The directions say "determine each unknown term in the given arithmetic sequence using an explicit formula. Show work"  determine the 50th term of the sequence: 100, 92, 84, .......  It it would be really great if someone could help me out & please show the work.

they are subtracting 8 each time -8(50)=-400 -400+100=-300

Hi ! This is an arithmetic progression with the ration r = -8 and a(1) = 100. An explicit formula for the n-th term would be a(n) = a(1) + (n-1)*r which means a(n) = 100 - 8(n-1). For the 50th term of the sequence we have a(50) = a(1) + (50-1)*r <=> a(50) = 100 + 49*(-8) <=> a(50) = 100 - 392 = -292.
