 the instantaneous rate of change of a function is defined as its derivative: f(x) = 1 + 3x - 1 - x = 2x so we calculate its derivative: f'(x) = 2 the derivative does not depend on x, so it doesn't matter that x = -2, the rate of change is 2 anyways.
