A 2 kg picture frame sits on a shelf at a height of 0.5 m. How much gravitational potential energy is added to the picture frame when it is lifted to a shelf of height 1.3 m?

Hi, since it says added, then we need to find the delta of potential energy. Recall that potential energy is defined as : m*g*h with m is the mass in kg, g is the gravity constant (9.8 m/s^2 but lets take 10 in this case for simplification) and h is the height measured from the surface of the earth. Now since we want to find the extra potential energy, we need the delta of Ep which is m*g*delta(h) with delta(h) is the diiference of the heighs (h2-h1) hence we obtain: Delta(Ep)=m*g*delta(h) =2*10*(1.3-0.5) =20*(0.8) 16 joule Hence thewe added 16 joule to the object if we lift it up from 0.5 m to 1.3 m
